Sometime over the last week, my brother started playing the pirates of the carabean mmorpg. I got stuck watching him today as my parents went out to have some fun so I kicked him off the computer and gave it a try.
I am surprised at how much fun it is to play...even with all of its HUGE FLAWS.
Cons:
Naming system. You can choose from their fairly large database of names or make your own. If you make your own, you get the default name "pirate, swashbuckler or something along those lines" untill your name is approved by a moderator.
Unchangable key map. Shift is used to interact with npcs, doors and environments.
The Pirate Code. Apparently, it is against the pirates code to shoot people. It is however ok to stab them. Or throw knives at them (grenades later i think). And it is just fine to use voodoo on them to drain their souls from their body. But guns are bad. They did compensate for this by making people only about 1/5 of the the targets for me to kill.
Pros:
Ship to Ship combat is very cool. One person can board their ship as captain and between 3 and 12 other people can join as crew. The crew controls individual cannons. And their are skills/powers that cannon users can acquire to help out in fights (fire/lightning/chains). The captain controls the steering and has a set of cannons he/she can use as well (for solo play).
Voluntary PVP. You can duel other players on land by transforming yourselves into skeletons. You can also become a Privateer for the Spanish. This allows you to attack anyone that has taken up the French flag as a Privateer while on the sea.
Modifying the character's appearance. They allow you to visit a barber to change your hair and facial features. There is a tailor that will make new clothes for you. A jeweler and a tattoo artist are also in the game to modify your appearance. It's like a doll that can blow up ships!
I am not sure how much time I will have to play in there, but I may try and play it a few more times in the next two weeks before I get shipped off to school.
